Media coverage of CTL Official Launch and Achieving INAB Accreditation

INNOVATION Policy Minister Michael Ahem has dropped in on a Limerick company that is setting new standards in the calibration of labora-tory equipment.
To mark Science Week, the Minister presented Plassey-based Calibration Technology Ltd — which tests pipettes for laboratories — with the internationally - recognized ISO (17025) accreditation.
Since being founded by managing director Brian Kelly only two years ago, CTL has won clients in healthcare, chemicals, research laboratories and pharmaceuticals, meaning players in some of the most regulated industries in the world depend on the help of the Limerick start-up to get their lab measurements right.
"We provide laboratories with a dedicated, accredited pipette calibration service, which ensures that these instruments will measure accurately to internationally- recognized standards," explained Mr. Kelly, for merly of Reagecon Diagnostics, the Shannon-based distributor of lab equipment.
He told the Limerick Leader that achieving ISO accreditation had been one of the main aims of CTL when setting up.
"What happened this week was our chief objective in setting up the com¬pany and as of from this week, we are set up to start commercializing the company," he said.
Apart from calibrating pipettes the hand-held device that measures minute quantities of liquid and familiar to anybody who studied chemistry in secondary school — CTL provides a training service in pipetting techniques.
The first and only company to win ISO accreditation in this area, CTL now has a competitive advantage over rival firms. And the company plans to expand into areas like balance, temperature and humidity calibration and anticipates this growth will see the workforce increase from five to 20 by 2012.
Pat O'Brien, accredita-tion officer of the Irish National Accreditation Board, explained the importance of the ISO award:
'Accreditation to this standard shows the out-side world that a laboratory's calibration work is technically controlled and that it is generating calibration reports of known and proven quality. It's what you hang your hat on when it comes to the verification of results." In praise of CTL.
Minister Ahem remarked: "companies cannot afford to stand still. They must continually update and improve their structures, processes and services, and one way to do this is to attain the high standards needed to earn accreditation to ISO level'.
Looking to the future, Mr. Kelly said the pipette calibration business in Ireland is worth over €2 million annually. But gaining accreditation also means CTL can look beyond these shores. It "opens the door for us to partner with global pipette manufacturers as their preferred provider of pipette calibration services. and to expand into other related areas", he said.

Science Week 2007. This makes CTL (www.calibrationtech.ie) the first and only dedicated pipette calibration laboratory in Ireland to achieve this international standard, which was awarded by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB).
ISO 17025 is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. "Accreditation to this standard shows the outside world that a laboratory's calibration work is technically controlled and that it is generating calibration reports of known and proven quality," said Mr. Pat O'Brien, Accreditation Officer, INAB, at the event. "It's what you hang your hat on when it comes to the verification of results."
Minister Ahern described the achievement of ISO 17025 by CTL as "tremendous,
given that this small company was only established in 2005," and referred to the firm's projections to have a staff complement of 20 by 2012 from its current base of 5. "Companies cannot afford to stand still. They must continually update and
improve their structures, processes and services, and one way to do this is to attain the high standards needed to earn accreditation to ISO 17025 level," he added.
Outlining the importance of ISO 1 7025 to achieving this growth, Kelly explained: "We estimate that the pipette calibration business in Ireland is worth in excess of 62m annually. ISO 17025 accreditation puts us in the running for this business, and allows us to provide laboratories - in Ireland initially and then internationally - with a faster and more flexible service. IS017025 also opens the door for us to partner with global pipette manufacturers as their preferred provider of pipette calibration services, and to expand into other related areas, such as balance, temperature and humidity calibration."
November 2007 Award of INAB Accreditation by Minister Michael Ahern Press Release:

Calibration Technology Ltd. becomes first dedicated pipette calibration laboratory in Ireland to achieve ISO 17025 accreditation
Mr. Michael Ahern, T.D., Minister for Innovation Policy at the Department of Enterprise,Trade & Employment presented Calibration Technology Limited (CTL) with ISO 17025 accreditation in Limerick today, Tuesday, November 13th, 2007, as part of Science Week 2007. This makes CTL (www.calibrationtech.ie) the first and only dedicated pipette calibration laboratory in Ireland to achieve this international standard, which was awarded by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB).
CTL works with laboratories to help them optimise the accuracy of their test results by ensuring their pipettes are precise. This has far-reaching consequences, for example in terms of the safety of the clients these laboratories serve, the credibility of the laboratories’ results and ultimately their reputation. “Pipettes are hand-held, spring-loaded devices, which are used extensively in laboratories to measure micro-quantities of liquids. We provide these laboratories with a dedicated, accredited pipette calibration service, which ensures that these instruments will measure accurately to internationally-recognised standards,” explained Brian Kelly, Managing Director, CTL.
ISO 17025 is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. “Accreditation to this standard shows the outside world that a laboratory’s calibration work is technically controlled and that it is generating calibration reports of known and proven quality,” said Mr. Pat O’Brien, Accreditation Officer, INAB, at the event. “It’s what you hang your hat on when it comes to the verification of results.”
